Creating the Future Together | Background Paper Workshop on Global Value Chain

The Background Paper Workshop of the Global Value Chain Development Report 2025 was successfully held from 12 to 13 December 2024 at the University of International Business and Economics. The workshop was organized by the Institute for Global Value Chain Studies of the University of International Business and Economics, the World Trade Organization, the Asian Development Bank, the Asian Economic Research Institute and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, with special thanks to the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the World Economic Forum and relevant researchers for their strong support and contributions.

On 12 December, Siyan Shen , Executive Director of the Institute of Global Value Chain Studies of the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE), presided over the opening ceremony, while ZhongxiuZhao , President of the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE), Professor Robert Koopman, Editor-in-Chief of the Report on the Development of Global Value Chains 2025, and Professor Albert Park, Chief Economist of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), made the opening speeches respectively. They warmly congratulated the seminar and expressed their great expectations for Report 2025, and at the same time, expressed their sincere thanks to the relevant institutions that supported the conference as well as the participating guests.

Under the theme of "Re-globalization - Opportunities for Building More Inclusive and Greener Global Value Chains", the GVC Report 2025 explores a number of key issues in the new global context, focusing on geopolitical risks, key industries, digital transformation, services openness, industrial policies and subsidies, and financing channels, as well as carbon pricing. The report will focus on geopolitical risks, key industries, digital transformation, openness of services, industrial policies and subsidies, financing channels, and carbon pricing. The background paper workshop was divided into eight topics, and the participants made presentations and interactive exchanges during the two-day meeting through a combination of online and offline methods. They reported on the progress of their respective studies and engaged in in-depth discussions to put forward constructive opinions and suggestions for the next step of advancing the research.

In the closing ceremony on 13 December, Professor Robert Koopman, Editor-in-Chief of the Global Value Chain Development Report 2025, Professor Xiaopeng Yin, Director of the Global Value Chain Research Institute, Satoshi Inomata, Chief Economist of the Asian Economic Research Institute (AERI), and Ralph Ossa, Chief Economist of the World Trade Organization (WTO), once again thanked all the individuals and organizations that have supported the Report in their concluding remarks. They expressed their deep expectations for the launch of the GVC Development Report 2025 and the future development of global value chains.
